In the 1400's during the renaissance period, dances were a popular thing in society. The upper class group of people considered dancing 'an essential social grace' and a lot of tutors were employed to teach different dances to them, as well as music and other things such as sports like martial arts and fencing. The lower class weren't able to pay for tutors etc so they would learn dances by just watching and trying to memorise them. Dances generally occurred at social occasions such as weddings and balls, or in court where the men and women would perform dances in front of royalty.
